People have very strong feelings about what is right and wrong. These feelings can motivate both prosocial behavior (such as volunteering) and antisocial behavior (such as voting to ban gay marriage). I am interested in all the ways our feelings of right and wrong intersect with oneÕs sense of oneself as a group member. One of my projects is exploring whether peoplesÕ sense of right and wrong fundamentally changes depending on whether they are dealing with other people in their own group or people in different groups. I am also exploring whether some people perceive bias expressed towards other groups (like gays or blacks) as moral and right. Finally, I am exploring how to harness peoplesÕ sense of right and wrong to motivate them to reduce some of their subtle biases. |
